Roman Mosaic Tapestry

Sue Sherman, Newmarket, ON

Dimensions: 46.5" x 46.5"

Materials: Cotton prints and Kona® cotton.

Techniques: Home-machine piecing and quilting.

Credits: The centre was originally suggested by photographs and description of a bed quilt from the Victoria & Albert Museum printed in the Kaffe Fassett book, Museum Quilt. However, my approach to quilting the centre and designing the remainder of the quilt is my own. My idea attempts to imitate the beautiful floor mosaics I saw on a visit to Pompeii. The two inner, black, octagonal frames and the outer border are quilted in a Greek motif using triple stitch.

Artist’s Statement:
Inspired by Ancient Roman, inlaid floor mosaics, over 5,000 tiny fabric scraps and heavy quilting on the centre printed-fabric work together to represent colourful pieces of ceramic and glass. This quilt would work as a carpet if I could bear to see people walking on it!
